10 Ways to Improve Car Mileage

As time goes by fuel prices are always on the increase. In such a scenario, it becomes essential for all vehicle owners to possess enough knowledge to make their fuel last longer. There are many things that you can do in order to squeeze more out of every gallon of fuel that you purchase. Besides savings on fuel, you will also be leading a more environmental friendly lifestyle. The recent increase in the number of eco-friendly concepts like solar power and the more widespread hybrid cars are just one step in the right direction.

Unfortunately, for the majority of car owners these alternatives are either too expensive or they are not reliable enough. The roads are still overrun with plain petrol or diesel powered engines.

Regardless of whether you own a 2-seater, an economy car, or a sports or sedan model there are things that you can implement as a daily habit to save money and contribute to the environment.

Given below are 10 such options that anyone can include in their daily routine.

1. Every engine/car model comes with an optimal setting and you should strive to stay within those limits. Switch gears at the right time and drive optimally.
2. Neglecting to service your vehicle in order to save money will only cost more in the end. So, always keep the vehicle serviced and in good condition. Maintain proper tyre pressure and notice if the vehicle seems sluggish or you hear knocks or bumps.
3. Ensure that the air filter is clean, especially if your daily drive involves dusty roads. A clean air filter has a tremendous impact on fuel efficiency. To make this easier you should opt for an air filter that you can clean and fit yourself. When you hold a clean air filter against the light you should be able to see the light coming through.
4. In addition to proper tyre pressure, you must also ensure that the tyres themselves are in good condition. It is a good practice to always get the tyre pressure checked when you go to refuel your vehicle.
5. Fuel economy suffers the faster you go, so stay within optimal limits. The various speed limits are set not only for safety but also keeping in mind optimal conditions for more vehicles so pay attention to them.
6. Though it may not always be possible, try to drive at a steady speed rather than in a stop-and-go manner. Long distance trucks can be seen driving precisely like this. They do not speed up and brake repeatedly but rather maintain a constant speed yet they are never late.
7. Do not stress the engine when switching gears. This also applies to automatics. Do not rev up the engine in manual cars and accelerate moderately in automatics. Revving up the engine and stopping suddenly are not part of good driving.
8. Use the air conditioner widely. At low speeds the air conditioner consumes a lot of fuel so try and avoid using it when driving slowly.
9. If your driving involves long trips then use stock wheels. They offer higher cooling and improved fuel efficiency over long distances.
10. When buying a vehicle, new or used, pay attention to fuel efficiency as well as its look and feel.

These are just a few points that can help you use fuel more efficiently. Therefore, be a sensible driver and opt for eco-friendly driving, so that you can contribute your little bit towards saving this planet from hazardous aftermath.
